The year was 1974 and the population of Scottsdale was approximately 65,000 people. Scottsdale Road saw very little, if any, traffic after 9 PM. Scottsdale was known, at that time, as the West most Western town. Bill Jenkins was the Mayor and the Memorial Professional Building, as it was known then, was newly finished. It sits on the southwest corner of Miller and Osborn roads.

On the southeast corner in 1974 was a working ranch. One evening I received a call from the housekeepers, they had a problem they could not handle. What, I asked, could that be? To my surprise came this answer. There are several cows in the basement parking lot and we are afraid to go down there to clean those offices.

Living not too far from the building at that time, I drove over and to my amazement; there they were in all their glory, and boy did they seem very big to me. How do we handle this problem!?

Calling on all my managerial skills, I knew trying to herd them out would not work, as I knew nothing about herding cows. Was there a cow removal service, I asked the housekeepers. Having grown up in Philly and New York I knew there had to be someone you called to remove those cows. Well let's get the rancher over to help. We did and he came over laughing and got the cows out of the basement and back on the ranch.

Unfortunately for the housekeepers the cows left behind some tokens of their recent visit. What an evening! Does anyone think they’ll ever have that problem today? Anyone have a working ranch near their building today? Probably not as Scottsdale has grown and changed so much since 1974.
